This summer, Vanguard University will hold a series of camps for youth in Orange County. The athletics teams will hold their annual youth camps for basketball, soccer and volleyball. The award-winning American Coast Children’s Theatre will also be holding camps, along with two youth shows.

Vanguard University’s annual athletics camps for kids of all ages feature basketball, soccer and volleyball, and offer more than learning skills to use on the court or field. Kids who attend the all-star camps receive leadership and character development alongside their sport, designed to create an unforgettable week.

The basketball camp has five sessions offered, running June through August for all skill levels, ages 5-14 or grades K-8. The university’s newly appointed director of athletics and 2014 NAIA National Championship coach, as well as Golden State Athletic Conference (GSAC) Coach of the Year, Rhett Soliday, and his assistant, Taylor Kelly, direct the basketball camps.

Vanguard’s distinguished volleyball coaching staff leads an overall skills camp in July, hosting high school students and 5-8 grades. The volleyball camp is split between age groups, allowing for boys and girls to prepare for their high school seasons, or as potential Vanguard University recruits. Campers get to know the current Vanguard Lions team with a Q&A session everyday with the players themselves. Balancing academics and athletics can be tricky, so this time gives players the opportunity to share their wisdom with campers.

“Faith is a huge part of the Vanguard University athletics summer camps, and core values of faith are always a part of what is taught to play the game,” said Eryn Leja of Huntington Beach, head coach for volleyball at Vanguard University. The Intercollegiate Athletic Program at Vanguard University is dedicated to the holistic growth and development of all student athletes.

Soccer camp is also offered one week in July to high school students who are prepping for college. Members of the Vanguard coaching staff, Lauren Walker and Shion Jahangiri, current players for Vanguard’s renowned soccer team, teach skills that will help high school students excel in their sport. Current players of both the soccer and volleyball teams at Vanguard attended the camps before they began playing at the collegiate level.

A new program on campus will also launch this July, American Coast Children’s Theatre. Hosted by the resident professional theatre company at Vanguard University, American Coast Theatre Company (ACTC), this program is for kids ages 6-15. With two, two-week workshops offered, students will develop musical theatre skills alongside of professionals and college interns in Vanguard’s own Lyceum Theater. Both workshops will conclude with a special performance of the musical produced during the workshop—The Jungle Book Kids and James and the Giant Peach.

“Not many camps can boast that their actors are able to perform on a university stage,” said Lissa Slay of Brea, director of education for American Coast Children’s Theatre. “The camps cultivate skills in both the student actors and the interns who help teach alongside of the professionals.”
